Spartan Will Give You a Trophy for Recruiting Your Own Members Into Its Race.

Deka's Gym vs Gym runs in your facility, on your staff's weekend, with members you recruit. Two titles are on offer — one is for how many people you signed up. The cost and the revenue share aren't published anywhere, including on Spartan's own page.

Spartan's Deka brand has launched something genuinely clever, and it's worth understanding exactly how clever before you sign your studio up.

It's called Gym vs Gym: a synchronised global competition weekend, October 2–4, where affiliate partner gyms host heats of the Deka Mile inside their own four walls. Ten Deka zones connected by 160m running intervals, one mile total. Age groups from 10 to 70+, plus two-person teams. Every athlete's score rolls up into a standing for their gym, tracked on a global leaderboard by gym, country and region. Trade press reports affiliate gyms had until July 17 to register.

Two titles are on offer. One is Fastest Gym. The other is Highest Participation.

Sit with the second one for a second. Spartan is awarding a trophy — the Golden RAM — for how many of your own members you successfully recruited into Spartan's format. That isn't an athletic achievement. That's a sales quota with a medal attached.

Should your studio host a Deka Gym vs Gym heat?

Only if you can answer what it costs, and right now you can't, because Spartan hasn't said. The official page publishes the format, the divisions and the awards, then links an affiliate toolkit and a "become an affiliate" button without naming a participation fee, an athlete price, or a revenue share for the gym providing the venue. You'd be committing your facility, your staff's weekend and your member base to a P&L you haven't been shown. That's not a reason to refuse. It's a reason to ask, in writing, before July 17.

Count what each side brings

Strip the Golden RAM off and look at the trade honestly.

You supply the room, the labor and the humans. Spartan supplies the format and keeps the brand, the data and the ranking. Your reward for winning Highest Participation is public confirmation that you were the most effective unpaid acquisition channel in the network.

This is the same trade ClassPass taught studios to accept — someone else owns the demand relationship, you provide the supply, and the customer's loyalty accrues to the platform. The difference is that ClassPass at least brought you strangers. Gym vs Gym asks you to bring your own.

The affiliate mechanic is the real design

Here's the part that should get your attention. Spartan states plainly that official events must be held within an Affiliate Partner Gym, or the results don't count on the global leaderboard. And if your gym isn't an affiliate? Your members can still compete — by going to an affiliate gym near them and listing your gym's name.

Read that twice. If you opt out, the mechanic doesn't remove your members from the competition. It routes them into a competitor's building for a weekend, where they'll train under a different roof, meet a different community, and see how the other place runs. Then it lets them write your name on the scoreboard as a consolation.

That's not an accident of the rules. That's the rules doing their job. It converts "no thanks" into a cost, which is the most elegant coercion mechanic in the whole design and the clearest signal of who this event was built for.

The honest counter-argument

And yet. Studios are chronically bad at manufacturing a reason to come back in October. A dated event, an external standard, a shared goal, a shirt at the end — these are the exact ingredients of retention, and most operators never build them because building them is hard and this one arrives in a box. If your CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) on a genuinely engaged member is meaningful, and a weekend of Deka reactivates twenty lapsed people, the math can work even on Spartan's terms. Renting someone else's format beats having no format.

The mistake isn't participating. The mistake is participating without noticing what you're paying, or believing the trophy is the point. Owned distribution beats rented distribution every time — but rented distribution beats none, as long as you know the lease terms.

So do it, if you want. Then ask the question the leaderboard is designed to stop you from asking: if 80% of your new members come from three sources, and you just spent a weekend proving you can mobilise your base on demand, why are you doing it for someone else's brand? You just demonstrated you can fill an event. That capability is yours. The format doesn't have to be theirs next October.

Win Highest Participation. Then go build your own race.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Deka Gym vs Gym?
It's a synchronised global competition weekend from Spartan's Deka brand, running October 2–4, 2026. Affiliate partner gyms host heats of the Deka Mile — ten Deka zones connected by 160m running intervals, totalling one mile — inside their own facilities. Athletes compete in age groups from 10 to 70+ or in two-person teams, and their scores roll up into a global gym standing.
What does it cost a gym to participate?
Spartan hasn't published it. The official Gym vs Gym page lists the format, the divisions and the awards, and links an affiliate toolkit — but states no participation fee, no cost to athletes, and no revenue share for hosting gyms. Any operator considering it should get those numbers in writing before committing a weekend.
Do you have to be a Deka Affiliate Partner Gym to take part?
To have results count, yes. Spartan states that official events must be held within an Affiliate Partner Gym or they won't appear on the global leaderboard. Members of non-affiliate gyms can still compete by going to an affiliate gym near them and listing their home gym's name — which means non-affiliates send their own members into a competitor's facility for the weekend.
